What is Hypnosis Therapy?

The first thing to know about hypnosis is that it is a natural state of mind. It happens to everyone all the time. We just don't recognize it. But you need to be clear on the differences between hypnosis, trance and hypnosis therapy.

Hypnosis is the process of putting someone into trance. Trance happens when you stop attending your conscious mind, and instead are using your unconscious mind.

Hypnosis therapy is the art of the speaking to someone else's unconscious mind while they are in trance. When people talk about hypnosis, they often use the terms 'hypnosis' and 'hypnotherapy' as if they are the same thing. They are not.

You can't actually do anything with hypnosis, except lead someone into trance. Just being in trance doesn't do much to help. It is the words you use while they are in trance that matters. That is where the magic happens. Hypnosis therapy is how you can help people to overcome their problems.

About Hypnosis Learning to hypnotize someone is fairly simple. Anyone can be hypnotized. And anyone can learn it in an hour or so. You can then go on to run a hypnosis stage show and make some of the audience quack like ducks if you want. That is easy. After all, many of them came there to be hypnotized. All you need some confidence and the ability to follow a script.

A stage hypnotist looks for people who can be hypnotized easily. Then tests them at going in and out of trance. Anyone who can not be hypnotized reliably is sent back to their seat. The few selected ones stay up on stage. They are all exhibitionists anyway.

The performer then puts them back into trance, and tells them to imagine they are washing machine, or a stripper or frightened of the color blue, or some other funny thing. In trance, for a while, their unconscious mind will accept that idea is true.

They will then act as they imagine a washing machine or a stripper would, and it's all very amusing. I enjoy stage shows and I have absolutely no problem with them. But it gives people the wrong idea of what it is like to be hypnotized.

You have been in trance many times

People think that trance is something weird or special or hard to achieve. In fact trance happens all the time. That is why hypnosis is easy to learn. You are just hitching a ride on a natural, normal process.

hypnosis

Maybe you have  driven home and couldn't remember anything about the journey? Or you have been so absorbed in a game or a film that you lost track of time? Or you suddenly realize you have no idea what someone just said to you?

When that happens, you have actually been in a trance. Going into a  trance like that is normal and natural and happens to all of us. There is nothing special about creating trance. What is special is how the right words can affect you in trance.

Doing Hypnosis therapy is where the skill is needed. A hypnotherapist needs to be trained, and empathetic, and insightful, and skilled in dealing with other people's problems.  Hypnosis therapy takes years to master, you can still be learning after a lifetime.

What exactly is hypnosis therapy?

This is actually a difficult question. Trance is natural, everyone can do it, it is powerful and it has been known about for centuries. But no can say exactly what hypnosis is.

All that the hypnotherapist does is to call up this natural state when required instead of waiting for it to happen at random. When you are in trance your mind is more open to suggestion. That is why hypnosis therapy is so effective for stop smokinglose weight or get back confidence.

So, what is hypnosis? There are a hundred different definitions, every hypnotherapist has their own ideas. We know how to do it, how to create trance, how to use it to fix things, but it still remains mysterious. But that doesn't really matter. We don't know exactly how gravity works either, but it doesn't stop us from using it.

There are also dozens of different types of hypnosis therapy. Some are based on commands, some are visualizations, often it involves imagining you are child again. Or that you are back in history, or you are looking at life from a cave by the sea.

Or any number of illogical seeming approaches. But they all work. The work in different ways, and part of the skill of a therapist to know which one to use.

Hypnosis is a form of mental dissociation. In trance, your mind gets so focused on one thing that it disregards everything else. And while it is so focused, it is open to any positive suggestion.

For example, our subconscious regulates all your bodily functions like taste visualization and smell, and your emotions. In trance, your subconscious is highly responsive to suggestion. So the hypnotist can suggest that you can taste lemon juice, or smell oranges.

Your subconscious will generate the appropriate responses, and you will experience them as if they were real. You really do taste the lemons, or smell the oranges.

In trance, your mind cannot tell the difference between something vividly imagined and the real thing. That is how change is manufactured.

How does hypnosis therapy work?

While you are in trance, you are using your unconscious mind, instead of your logical mind. You still react to things you see and hear, but you do not logically evaluate them.

In fact, this is not so different from your daily routines. Much of your daily behavior is unconscious.

When you are driving and you see a red light, you do not start to consider who designed it, or how it got there - you just press the pedal. You have learned to obey the traffic sign unconsciously while thinking about something else.back to stop smoking

In that unconscious state your mind becomes responsive to suggestion. In hypnosis, under the guidance of a professional hypnotist, you can do things you cannot do in normal circumstances.

For example, hypnotism can alter your heart rate, reduce your blood pressure, make you feel that one hand is warmer than the other.

Or ignore pain, and perform many other functions that are normally not within conscious control. You can be hypnotized to recall long forgotten events,

Most psychological  problems are caused or maintained by bad thinking, by ideas put into your mind by other people. Ideas like 'you are no good', 'should never have have been born', 'don't deserve to succeed', 'I will never be good enough', 'people will reject me'. These bad thoughts, and others like them, are what cause most of the misery people feel.

Hypnotherapy can clear these out. Releasing you from your past will let you live your life the way it should have been all along. The theory is that hypnosis works because your mind processes hypnotic suggestions automatically. When you are in trance, the normal process of thinking and worrying is absent.

It works because it seems to your mind as if the suggestions come from inside yourself, rather than coming from outside. Your mind will therefore accept the suggestions and will act on them.

What is hypnotherapy? Techniques

What actually happens in a hypnosis session?

The hypnotist will sit you in a comfortable chair and after checking that you are ready will then begin the hypnotic induction. The hypnotic induction is a form of words designed to lead you into a relaxing and comfortable trance.

During the hypnosis therapy session you are deeply relaxed, but you are actively involved in the process at every stage. You are not a passive observer. You are always aware of what is going on. You are and following what I am saying, and actively working with me.

I might ask you at various points to open your eyes, to move a hand, or to speak. These tasks are all designed to let me know how you are progressing. They also to let you know that things are going smoothly.

You will not go to sleep. I will make sure that you do not get so relaxed that you go to sleep - I need you to be able to communicate with me all the time.

Once in trance, the hypnotist will guide you in making the changes you want. At all times you will be aware of what is going on. You can talk, move and even come out of trance if you want to.

You will be pleasantly relaxed but you will be able to hear a telephone ring or a car horn outside. But when you are in the trance state, your mind will dismiss these things as of no importance.

You will normally remember everything that was said and you will not lose control.

At the end of the session the hypnotist will bring you out of trance again, usually including suggestions that you are feeling great. You will come out of trance feeling refreshed and alert. After hypnosis you might feel a bit 'spacey' for a while but you are safe to drive.

What does hypnosis feel like?

Most people find the experience very enjoyable. A hypnotic trance is like a state of deep relaxation. Your mind becomes detached from everyday cares and concerns.

In trance, nothing seems to matter, you feel you don't have anything to do, anything to worry about. You are aware of the hypnotist's voice, Hypnotherapy Chairof things around you, but it is too much effort to attend to them.

There is no right or wrong way to experience hypnosis. Some people go into trance and report feeling deeply relaxed and sinking into the chair. Others report a light airy feeling of drifting or flying. For most people, once you are deep in trance you feel a lovely luxurious ease.

You can choose to forget about everything and detach completely from your surroundings. You might feel disconnected from your body and just exist in a timeless formless state until called back. Most people's first words after a hypno session is "Wow! That was amazing."

Hypnosis Therapy - Metaphors and Suggestions

Once you have reached the level of trance that's right for you, I will begin the process of helping you to make the changes you want. I will usually start by gently taking you to a place where you can feel safe, warm and content.

From there I will possibly take you on a guided journey where you overcome obstacles, meet wise leaders, or interact with people you used to know. The exact content depends on what you are wanting to achieve.

I will also usually mix in a lot of suggestions about your own capabilities, assumptions, perceptions and behaviour. I will also usually invite you to some future situation where you will act with complete confidence with your new feelings.

What is hypnotic reframing?

This is why the hypnotist can suggest that events in the past mean something different, or are no longer important or are fading away. Your unconscious mind will incorporate these suggestions into a new way of reacting to these things.

Similarly, the hypnotist can guide you to imagining a future where you can do whatever it is you find hard to do right now. In trance, your powers of imagination are enhanced.

At the end of the hypnosis session I will guide you out of trance again. You will come out of trance feeling refreshed and alert. Most people feel as if they have just wakened from a lovely nap, feeling really relaxed.

Most people find the whole hypnotherapy experience very enjoyable. You will be good to drive and do all the stuff you normally do.

At the end of the hypnosis session you will feel deeply relaxed and refreshed.

FAQ FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Some common worries about hypnosis

I have never tried hypnosis, will I be comfortable?

You will not be doing anything you don't want to. Stage hypnosis is for entertainment, clinical hypnotherapy is about helping you make the changes you need. Hypnosis is gentle, relaxing and enjoyable. You will be in control at all times.

You will feel relaxed but you are not asleep, you know what is going on and you actively participate during the therapy. Hypnosis is totally natural.

How does hypnosis work?

Hypnotherapy is a way of utilizing your own natural abilities to heal and change. The therapist puts you into trance and then suggests various ways of thinking and behaving while your mind is relaxed and receptive.

The theory is that when you are relaxed and receptive these suggestions will replace the current ways of thinking and will give you the outcome you want. Because it comes from your own mind, there is no resistance and no side effects.

Can I be hypnotized?

Everyone can be hypnotized. If you are able to imagine someone's face, or recall a tune in your mind, or recreate the feel of stroking fur, then you can be hypnotized. Strong minded people are excellent candidates.

If you have ever been lost in a daydream, or if you have been so absorbed in something that you lost track of the time, then you have been in trance. In fact, you have already been in trance several times today. Everyone has.  Ever gone into a store, and have no idea what you went in for?

What if I am too intelligent to be hypnotized?

In fact, the more intelligent you are, the easier it is to be hypnotized. If you have ever dreamed, then you can go into hypnosis.

What if I do it wrong?

You can't do anything wrong and you don't have to do any preparation. All you have to do is follow the instructions about breathing and let yourself relax. It doesn't matter if you are a bit nervous or if you have never done it before.

Hypnotherapy is completely natural and although you might not realise it, you already know how to go into trance. Your own unconscious mind will take over and do it for you.

What if I am nervous?

It doesn't matter if you are nervous or calm or anything else. Many people are nervous, that's quite normal. But there is no need to be. All I will be doing is asking you to breathe, and everything just happens naturally from then on.

The only thing that is bad is holding back on stuff you really want to deal with. Some people feel embarrassed or ashamed and think they are the only person in the world with that problem. Don't worry, whatever your issue is, I have heard it before.

What do I have to do before I get there?

You don't have to do anything to get ready to be hypnotized. Some people like to write down the points they want to talk about, but you don't have to.

Will I have to remember everything?

Usually you will remember everything that was said to you and how you felt about it. Very occasionally a client will get so relaxed that they will have no recollection at all of what went on. This shows that they went into a really deep trance, and is a good thing. They actually do remember it, but not consciously.

If I say "Do you recall me talking about a rose?" they will say "Oh, yes, actually I do, now you mention it". What very often happens is the client says afterwards "Look I'm sorry. I must have fallen asleep during the trance, there are parts I just don't remember".

This is an indication the client was going up and down in trance. He remembers the parts where he was lightly hypnotized, but when I touched on things of importance to him, he went deeper into trance.

He cannot recall those parts consciously, because he were not processing those thoughts  with his conscious mind. If I put him into trance again, he can give complete details. But he cannot recall a thing when awake. This is known as State Dependent Memory, and is quite normal.

What if I don't do it right?

You cannot do anything wrong. Everyone responds to hypnosis in their own way, and you will be guided and reassured at every stage. Hypnosis is a natural ability we all have. Going into trance is something you already know how to do.

I just guide you in, like an air traffic controller guiding a plane down on to the right runway. It is always you flying the plane, not me. All I do is to give you some suggestions about when you might want to turn left or right, but you are always in control.

What happens afterwards?

In hypnosis you will feel amazingly relaxed, you will feel that nothing really matters right now, that you could do anything you wanted but you can't be bothered, that you just want to go on lying there and enjoying this wonderful feeling. Most people just want it to go on and on...

What are the side effects of hypnosis therapy?

Professionally done hypnotherapy has no side effects. Sometimes, after the therapy, people will report having emotional moments, but that is just their mind releasing old hurts.

Is hypnotherapy safe?

Hypnosis is natural and safe. There are no secret dangers. In fact hypnosis is the only therapy with absolutely no side effects. No one has ever been harmed by going into a hypnotic trance.

While you are in trance you are aware of everything that is going on. You are not unconscious. The whole process is gentle and enjoyable, and many people do self-hypnosis every single day.

hypnotherapyFrom time to time you hear stories about the dangers of hypnosis. These give shocking accounts of someone, somewhere, (the names, times and locations are never given) getting stuck in a trance and not able to wake up.

Or having sex and not remembering it, or giving all their money to a stranger. These 'hypnosis dangers' stories are all nonsense. It doesn't work that way.

There are no dangers. The most common stories are about how some person somewhere was up on stage and then died afterwards. The fact is that millions of people go up on stage each year and none of them die from it.

The dangers of a hypnosis show are the same as the dangers of eating grapes. Each year thousands of people die in hospital after eating green grapes. Nobody seriously believes that it is the grapes that causes people to die in hospital.

If I let myself be hypnotized can it make me do anything?

Movies pretend that your unconscious mind will accept any suggestion. That is just not true. The primary function of your subconscious mind is to keep you safe. Anything which goes against your basic values or which might harm you will just be ignored.

If hypnotists could get people to do anything they wanted, then I would just go to the nearest bank, tell manager to give me the contents of the safe, and forget I was ever there. Sadly, it doesn't happen.

Is Stage Hypnosis real? What is hypnosis

The fun demonstrations seen on stage or TV are real, but specially set up. The people you see really are hypnotized, they are not pretending. But the people who volunteer to go on stage are natural exhibitionists.

They are also very carefully screened. The hypnotist makes sure that only highly hypnotizable are selected. The things people do on stage are things that they would do in normal life, given enough encouragement.

The volunteers are aware of what they are doing and can stop at any time. People usually report that on stage they felt as if part of them was watching someone else do the antics and they were happy to go along with the suggestions.

But they were aware of what was going on at all times, and could have stopped if they wanted to. No one can be made to do anything that conflicts with their own safety or their own moral values.

If you are asked to do something you are not comfortable with you will instantly come out of trance and back to normal awareness. It happens all the time on stage shows, but they don't show that bit.

There is nothing in your own mind that can harm you, and modern hypnosis therapy does not go back to old hurts and open them up again.

Will I reveal my deepest secrets?

You will not say anything you would not divulge normally. And you won't talk in your sleep or anything like that. If the hypnotist touches on anything that you do not want to deal with, then your subconscious mind will just ignore the suggestion.

You won't tell the hypnotist any secrets, but you might tell yourself some. It often happens that in trance you become aware of the hidden beliefs that have been holding you back, or identify the source of self sabotage that prevents you succeeding.

The secret of hypnotherapy is using general suggestions that could apply to many situations. Your subconscious mind will pick up the generalized hypnotic wording and apply it to your particular problem. Once you become aware of that hidden problem you can deal with it.

 Can I Get Stuck?

That cannot happen. No one has ever got 'stuck' in trance. It just isn't possible. There is no danger of this. Trance is a natural state that you go into every day, your mind Hypnotherapy knows how to deal with it. You go in and out of trance constantly.

Even if the hypnotist somehow went away and left you alone, your subconscious is still working to protect you. If there was any sudden alarm you would waken to full alertness instantly.

For as long your mind is busy with whatever the hypnotist suggested, you will remain in trance. But when you finish processing it, if nothing else was said to you, you would gradually become aware of your surroundings. You would waken naturally, as if from a gentle snooze.

When you leave a normal session you will be bright and alert and totally out of trance. You can drive, you can do everything you would normally.

How long does hypnotherapy last?

Hypnotherapy not only works faster than most other therapies, it is permanent. Once you change your thinking in trance, that change is forever.

For example, once you realize that there is no Santa Claus, it is simply impossible to go back to believing in him. It is the same with hypnosis - the instant your mind accepts the hypnotic suggestion, you don't have to do that behavior anymore, and you are free for life.

Even after the session is over, your hypnosis therapy goes on working. A good hypnotherapist will leave suggestions that will last long into the future. It is a bit like showing you how to cook instead of selling you a sandwich. Your hypnosis therapy session should last a lifetime.
