Timeline Therapy lets you see your life as if it were laid out as a line. The line stretches from birth to the present moment, and on to your future. You position yourself on that line at a point that represents right now. Then you are free to move up and down the line. You can move back in time and re-experience things from a safe perspective.

Or you can move along the line into the future. You can test out how your future life will feel. Or you can look back along the whole timeline and notice what themes are evident. You can then go to various parts of the line and make whatever changes you need to.

Do this until you have sorted out all the old issues that are affecting you. Spend as long as you want travelling along your line. Timeline Therapy can be revisited several times. Each time you use it, you change a little. That change enables you to make more changes, and so on

Time Line Therapy


Timeline therapy is based on the theory that all of your memories are stored one after the other in a continuous line. A bit like how old-fashioned tape recorders used to store your music. Your mind stores every memory, or at least every significant memory, and under the right circumstances you are able to access everything that ever happened to you.

Much of this theory is based on the work of Wilder Penfield. He was a neurosurgeon who discovered that when he stimulated the brains of patients during surgery, patients would recall unexpected and forgotten memories, depending upon exactly where he put his probe.

Finding negative memories

Most of your negative emotions are associated with negative memories. Time line therapy visualization gives you a way to identify and clear those negative memories.

You are led into trance, and asked to visualise your own life as if it was a line stretching from birth up to the present moment. You might imagine it as a path, or a railway line, or a long chain stretched out, the exact visualization does not matter.

Then you are invited to find yourself a position somewhere on that line. Your unconscious mind will decide whereabouts on that line you want to settle. From that point on the line you can look back in time, and you can look forward from that position to your current location.

As you look along the line, you will be able to identify significant events in your own life. The therapist will lead you up or down the line to each significant event. You will be able to describe the event, and what it meant to you, and how you would like to clear it.

Clearing negative memories

The therapist will encourage you to develop an effective way of clearing the line. All other memories are unaffected. You will then be encouraged to go to all the other significant events in your life. One by one, you will be able to clear away all the negative memories that are causing your negative emotions. Ask you clear the major negative emotions, you may find that you become aware of other, related memories. These too, get cleared until your timeline is filled only with positive or neutral memories.

The final stage is for you to glide up and down your timeline looking for anything that isn't right. And when you find something you will know how to clear it.
