Everyone has stress
Anxiety is normal. Having some anxiety is a natural survival mechanism. Everybody needs some level of anxiety: it helps us to recognise danger and to stay out of harm's way. But you should not be feeling anxious about travelling, meeting people, going to work, or what other people might think about you. For some people, ordinary everyday things can be very frightening. The most common one is generalized anxiety. This anxiety seems to have no specific cause. This typically gets worse over time. Trying to face it and forcing yourself to do it often just makes it worse and causes even more loss of confidence. About five percent of the population suffer from this but few seek treatment. Most don't realize they need treatment or that treatment even exists. However, there are very effective treatments available, including hypnosis. Even chronic anxiety can be turned into the level of calm and control you want. It might take several sessions, but it can be achieved.
Anxiety frequently arises when some event at work or in relationships causes stress and that stress is then applied to other areas. In other cases you may have had to live through a long period of stress. If you responded to it by generating a level of stress, then that level of anxiety has become a habit. Or you may have gone through some dramatic crisis. Even though the crisis is over, part of you cannot let go of the stress and anxiety that it generated. It is as if your switch is permanently stuck at On. If left uncontrolled, this can lead to panic attacks. Panic attacks are not actually dangerous, but the fear of having a panic attack stops many from enjoying life to the full.

Managing your Anxiety
To manage anxiety effectively it is necessary to break the cycle. The first step is to help you understand how the anxiety process works. This will give you the tools to manage the things that are causing the stress.

This will reduce the level of stress hormones in your body. Many anxious people don't know how to relax or what relaxation actually feel likes. Most of the stress in your life comes from future events that are not stressful in themselves but are things that you can imagine going wrong. Thinking of all the ways that things can wrong triggers more stress and cause more anxiety. Meeting someone, writing a report, going somewhere new - these and other ordinary things can generate overwhelming feelings which almost guarantees failure which generates even more anxiety. This process is known as catastrophizing.

Panic attacks anxiety
Everything we do, everything we see and hear automatically causes the subconscious mind to 'go inside' to find matching experiences from the past. This process is normally goes on unnoticed. However for an anxious person, all the retrieved images have the potential for catastrophe. Eating a red apple, for example, might cause the mind to seek previous occasions of eating an apple, or of red things in general. The mind will rapidly flick through its 'filing cabinet' and highlight one or two images or memories.
These are normally below the level of conscious awareness but in the brief instant that they flicker across the mind, the anxious person will react with a momentary surge of anxiety without ever being aware of the cause. Every time the person does the same activity or sees the same thing, these same memory retrievals happen. In many instances worry and uncertainty is linked to some more general issue. It is often useful to consider using hypnosis to deal with that first.
With practice you can learn to become aware of any images that cause a reaction. Then just grab the memory, usually as an image, and consciously examine it. If the memory is harmless then it gets let go, if it actually has some kind of negative association then awareness can remove the negative associations. Doing this will let you get rid of all kinds distressing memories and feelings.
Post Hypnotic Suggestion
Part of the hypnosis session includes a series of post hypnotic suggestions about how you will behave when confronted with a problem situation. This will stop you even starting to panic. The post hypnotic suggestion takes you into a pre-rehearsed behaviour, so instead of reacting with distress and panic, you end up calm and in control.
